Working toward supporting its missionaries to share the Gospel effectively, the Olivet Assembly of Southeast Asia (OA SEA) General Office has recently embarked on researching case studies of successful evangelism methodologies currently applied by its member churches across the region.

In order to widen the door to reach God’s prepared souls from diverse backgrounds, these case studies are being researched and developed with the aim to serve as helpful reference for OA SEA missionaries to consider adopting them in their own mission fields.

Case studies that are being currently researched include the Bible Teacher Training in the Philippines, the evangelism workshop in Singapore, and also the English outreach program in Cambodia.

Through these case studies, it is anticipated to encourage OA SEA churches to develop their evangelism approaches according to their local context toward engaging all kinds of people from various backgrounds, and eventually be led to know Jesus Christ and make Him known in their respective mission fields.

Should youths be perceived as akin to backbenchers, waiting on the sidelines before stepping onto the mission field to spread the gospel?

This question strikes at the heart of a prevailing misconception within some, the idea that youth are mere spectators, waiting on standby, preparing themselves until they mature enough to actively engage in mission work. But does this ring true in God’s history? In fact, throughout history, young people have been at the forefront of Christian movements and revivals, playing a pivotal role in spreading the gospel fervently and igniting spiritual awakenings.

Consider the Welsh Revival of 1859, where reports highlighted the profound impact on youth. Children as young as 10 gathered for prayer meetings, becoming fervent intercessors. Similarly, in 1858, Dwight Moody’s outreach to young people in Chicago sparked a movement that birthed a vibrant church. These historical examples underscore the importance of youth in advancing the Kingdom of God.

Scripture further reinforces the need to empower youth for the gospel. Acts 2:17 prophesies that in the last days, God will pour out His Spirit on all people, regardless of age. Neglecting the work of the Holy Spirit among the youth contradicts biblical teachings and overlooks their potential to lead and impact the Kingdom.

In contemporary settings, we see young people actively involved in ministry and missions, bringing passion, energy, and creativity to the church. They are not merely the future of the church but active participants in God’s work today. Recognizing and harnessing their potential is crucial for sustaining and expanding the work of God.

So, the answer Olivet Assembly of Southeast Asia gives to the question posed, no, youth are not the back benchers warming up to play in the mission field. They are the frontline missionaries, ready and equipped by the Holy Spirit to win souls for Christ. Let us heed the call to invest in equipping and empowering the youth for the work of the gospel, recognizing them as invaluable partners in God’s redemptive mission.

Saint Luke Society (SLS), an evangelical medical ministry made up of professional doctors and nurses which is affiliated with the World Olivet Assembly, conducted its medical missionary work project called ‘Healing Hands’ in the Philippines. Starting from February 4th the work has been carried out in Bulacan Pandi, north of Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

The opening ceremony was hosted by the local JWMC church and among attendees were representatives of local barangays, doctors from local hospitals, officials from City Hall and Urban Development Corporation. Warm greetings were exchanged during this time.

Shin Myeong-Seop, representative of SLS shared in his greeting, “Korea used to be poorer than the Philippines, but numerous medical missionaries came to help. I came here to spread hope to the poor neighbors without forgetting that grace.” Following this, Dr. Shin signed MOUs for SLS and EMAK between Bulacan Pandi Barangay and JWMC, respectively, and promised to continue to cooperate in medical missionary work.

The Pandi area is considered to be economically underprivileged, with some of the poorest people who were in the past relocated here from other parts of the Philippines. Most of the residents do not have free access to medical care or hospitals. Numerous residents came to visit the team and received the treatment from doctors and nurses.

This medical mission was divided into internal medicine, dentistry, dermatology, oriental medicine, and pharmacy. Dentist Shin Myeong-seop and Dr. Park Min-hwan of the SLS Korea, and doctors, dentists, oriental doctors, nurses, and pharmacists recruited for this trip to accompany SLS staff took charge of each department along with 20 Medical University students from Korea as well as members of several local Filipino churches participated in the medical mission as volunteers.

About 400 patients were treated on a single day. Doctors and medical staff of the Healing Hands project worked united in treating numerous local residents sometimes in hot weather conditions. The local pastor told Dr. Shin this was a rare event where people received treatments in many different medical areas on a large scale like this, and expressed his desire to continue such collaborative medical mission work in the future.

The annual medical mission trips such as this one called ‘Healing Hands’ focus on disadvantaged people who cannot otherwise access medical help for various reasons, be it limited access to medical services or poor medical infrastructure. St. Luke Society brings them the care that they need and serves them with the heart of Jesus.

On November 13, 2022, a mission conference was called by Olivet Assembly (OA) of Singapore to develop and strategize greater ways of evangelism to be abundantly fruitful in the remaining days of 2022.

Beginning with a reflection on the 30th World General Assembly (WGA), the mission leaders took turns to share about the new evangelism and discipleship strategies that were learnt through attending the global gathering. Subsequently, the recent mission direction provided by the OA Southeast Asia General Office was then reviewed together.

Following a time of mission reports with respective plans for the coming week, there were active discussions to further improve and diversify current evangelism approaches, given the last three weeks of November being the last weeks of the current semester in the university campuses.

Moreover, with thanksgiving round the corner, a Thanksgiving Retreat is being planned as an opportunity to gather many campus students to study the Bible and be transformed by the Word.

After the conference, the leaders participated in a time of prayer for the goals and plans that were established, as they look ahead to co-work closely with the Holy Spirit to lead many thirsty souls to listen to the Gospel of Christ.

Out of God’s great desire to be truly loved by his people, we have been given the gift of free will to choose who and what we will give our affections to. God, knowing full well that not all of us would choose to love him, still created us out of his longing for close relationship with us. If we are to live the life God intends for us, the only fulfilling life possible, we need a renewal of our first love.

Thousands of years ago, the church in Ephesus was much like we are today. Revelation 2:4 says in reference to the church in Ephesus, “But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.” The Ephesians were still working and waiting for God. They hadn’t abandoned their faith, just their first love.

But Scripture makes it clear that when it comes down to it in the end, what will be most important is the way in which we have loved God. When asked what the most important commandment was, Jesus replied, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind” (Luke 10:27).

Loving God is our first priority. Our love for God is the foundation on which all of life is to be lived. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 says, “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” This life is all about the posture of your heart.

Scripture makes it clear that he isn’t after our service first, but our love. He only desires us to work with him if it is done out of our love for him. If we prophesy, show incredible acts of faith, or even give up our lives for him out of anything but love, he calls it “a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.”

God is after your heart. More than anything else in the world, he wants to love you and be loved by you. Of course he wants you to co-labor with him and obey his commandments, but only out of love for him. Yes, he wants you to lead others to him, but out of the desire to share the incredible love you’ve been shown. Too often we size up our relationship with God based on how often we’ve gone to church, how many mission trips we’ve been on, how many people we’ve won to Jesus, how many committees we’ve served on, or how much of our finances we’ve given to God. And too often we do all of that trying to win over a God who already loves us more than we could ever ask or imagine. God is the father in the prodigal son story running out to meet you and celebrate you regardless of anything you’ve ever done or will do. He’s the shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to go after the one. He’s the God who leaves his throne to die for the very people who shouted, “Crucify him, crucify him!” And he’s the God who waits patiently every day to show you the depth of his love, that nothing you could ever do will change the way he loves you.
Nothing could be more important than living your life on the foundation of God’s greatest commandment: to love him. And while it’s incredibly important to spend your life loving God, he knows you will only be able to do so if you’ve encountered his love first.

1 John 4:19 says, “We love because he first loved us.” Experiencing God’s love is the beginning and end to everything we do as his children. It’s out of encountering the affections of our heavenly Father that our hearts will be stirred to love him back. Let’s take time today to encounter the love of our heavenly Father and let his kindness draw us to repentance (Romans 2:4). Encounter the heart of God, and let his love renew within you your first love.

Many young people like to play TikTok and can make short videos to get traffic first and later follow up with people that can evangelized. Missionary Rebekah invited her to participate in making short videos, and she was willing to participate and started looking for short videos on a variety of topics.

They hopes that through various ways of evangelism, they can reach people who need the gospel. Seeing her enthusiasm for evangelism, it is grateful for God’s work and hopes that more people will join the evangelism team to save souls in Thailand.
